Different solutions for solar protection and thermal comfort

Get to know products for all budgets and types of architecture, which help to lower temperature of places with high incidence of sun.

Summer is coming and with it comes the high temperatures and the incidence of sun for a longer period of the day. But with the latest increases in energy bills, it is unfeasible to maintain the daily and constant use of refrigerating appliances, such as air conditioners and fans. As it is not always possible to change the civil part and the building of the place, the R + T South America fair, in partnership with Glass South America, presents some options to solve the overheating of the environments, whether houses or businesses.

It is very important that the architect or engineer evaluates which of the following options best fits the customer's needs, according to the incidence of on-site radiation, lighting, thermal control, harmonious appearance and available budget.

1. Curtains and Blinds
Curtains and blinds are simple, economical and very practical resources to escape the high temperatures. In addition, they can still be used as a decorative piece of the environment. According to Mauricio de Queiroz, responsible for the expansion of Bedeque Persianas, this is an excellent option to help cool the environment, since they can be manufactured with different types of fabrics, some of which have specific treatments for the thermal control of the environment. "A case of this type of fabric is what we call the Sun Screen, which in its composition has these thermal properties. A very interesting variation of this fabric is a version with a metallic coating on the back that, in addition to increasing the efficiency against the thermal block, still reduces the incidence of ultraviolet rays in the environment, "says Maurício.

One of the most sought-after models on the market is the roller blind, as explained by Terezinha Semprebon, director of Sunshine Cortinas e Persianas. "Blinds provide thermal comfort to environments because they have a design and technical composition specific to the sun protection, which air the environment avoiding the unwanted 'greenhouse effect'. The most suitable product is the Roller Curtain, which has several special fabric options that provide the sun protection, ensure constant ventilation and prevent the entry of UV rays”.

More than the aesthetic and luminous part, the representative of Bedeque Persianas believes that clients need to be aware of the type of protection that the curtain and blinds offer and ask for the help of specialists. "What a person needs to specify to the curtain or blinds company is the type of block they need on the environment. Very important information that needs to be considered is that the brick or cement blocks walls accumulate a certain amount of heat during the day and release the night. With this, it is necessary the assistance of qualified companies and expertise so that the curtain and blind can deliver greater efficiency in the retention of heat," he explains.

Taking into account the other types of products sold in Brazil for thermal control, such as films, reflective glass, the cost of building double walls or specific materials for thermal comfort, curtains and blinds become a cheaper option.

2. Reflective glasses
Reflective glasses have advanced technology for thermal comfort and brightness control. The specification of specialized professionals is essential so that the chosen glass is according to the indices of solar factor, transmission of light and reflectivity. The sun emits a radiation, which is divided into 3 parts: ultraviolet rays - these can cause skin cancer and wear down the furniture; visible light and infrared rays - which emit most of the heat. The integrated metallization of the glass causes much of this radiation to be reflected to the external environment. The blockage of heat and light will vary according to the color of the glass and the degree of reflection chosen.

"Reflective glasses are capable of blocking heat by up to 70%. In addition to ensuring privacy due to the mirrored aesthetics found in some of the solar control glass lines, they also allow the entry of natural light, helping to save energy and keeping the temperature pleasant for longer," explains Marlene Moura, marketing for Divinal Vidros.

However, not all types of glasses are capable of performing this thermal control function. "Glass is a fantastic material, able to isolate from the wind and rain while also allowing the visualization of the landscape and the integration between people. On the other hand, in its simplest form, it is not able to isolate the heat. On the contrary, it allows the radiation of the Sun to cross the glass and, for a physical matter, this heat cannot "return" to the external side, creating a "greenhouse effect" inside the environments. The reflective glasses, in turn, have a metallized layer capable of reflecting much of the intense light of the sun as well as of the radiation, preventing this effect from occurring," explains Rebeca Andrade, PKO do Brasil marketing.

When choosing one of these glasses it is necessary to evaluate, for example, the position of the sun during the day. The morning sun is less intense than evening sun, and this allows the use of lighter glasses. Another important factor is the level of brightness required for the environment, offices require less light so there is no glare on the computer screen, for example. Residences, on the other hand, usually require a higher level of illumination.

The important thing is to have the support of experts to make the best choice. Rebeca adds that the only contraindication to the use of this type of glass would be "places where the constant visual integration of environments, such as shop windows, is necessary, because the reflection will disturb the visualization of objects".

Although they cost more and are more complicated in installation, reflective glasses are a great investment option in the long term. By spreading the heat and controlling the brightness, these materials allow an electric energy saving with air conditioning and artificial light. "This savings can reach from R$ 30 to R$ 40 per square meter of installed glass, per year, compared to common glass. This translates into the recovery of the investment in 2 to 3 years, and the entire useful life of the work will be of profit," concludes Rebeca.

3. Awnings and Lightweight Architecture
Due to aesthetics, awnings have never been one of the most sought-after resources for thermal control. However, over the years, the industry has been modernizing and finding new models of production, so that they add in architecture and still partially prevent the incidence of solar rays. The most common awning today is "retractable" or "retractable vertical", but other coverings and innovative systems gain more and more space in the market, such as tensioned roofing, pergolas and lightweight architecture - made with textile membrane. This last option stands out in the market, mainly for commercial places, like restaurants and open air bars. However, the installation of this type of material deserves greater attention in the choice and technical specification, as Andreas Schultheiss, owner of Toldo-Vela, explains.

"Today, there are automated mechanisms and high-tech materials that harmonize with the constructions and generate thermal comfort, but in the design of an architectural project there may be obstacles such as location and position of the work (beach and roofs of buildings), law (measure of the constructed area allowed), design (functionality and style) and index of solar radiation (sun angulation and UV exposure)”.

Therefore, it is necessary the help of architects or engineers. The choice of lightweight architecture is quite modern and, given the feeling of a lighter and cooler environment, has been conquering entrepreneursand business owners.

The role of these professionals is fundamental in the choice and technical specification so that the product delivers the maximum efficiency and the consumer feels satisfied. Another important tip is that the months leading up to summer are the most sought-after for selling these products. This increase is linked to a number of factors, such as: high temperatures, families arranging the house for the holidays, receiving 13th salary, among others. For this reason, it is important to do a long market research to verify the pricing, product quality and delivery.
